People from as far away as England are reading an A.P. story generally headlined: Hollywood heavyweights to honor S.F. mayor.
The story reads, "The June 14 event for Gavin Newsom at the home of director Rob Reiner will be co-hosted by Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin, television producer Norman Lear, billionaire entertainment mogul Haim Saban and others.
"Gavin has emerged as a true hero and solidified his role in American history as a champion of equal rights for all," Reiner wrote in a solicitation letter."
Mayor Newsom is being described as a "bold leader" and "true hero" who "showed courage" -- terms seldom used in our poll-driven Democratic Party.
Lead and people follow
On May 19, Matier & Ross reported that, "a stunning 86 percent of those surveyed approved of the job Newsom is doing." Which, for those of you keeping score, makes Gavin Newsom more popular than milk chocolate.
Adriel Hampton listed some more numbers in his blog two weeks ago: "District-by-district crosstabs show Mayor Gavin Newsom's favorable/unfavorable numbers at: 81/14 in District 1; 84/14 in District 3; 91/7 in District 5; 80/19 in District 7; 74/18 in District 9; and 71/25 in District 11 (which also had the highest number of residents who feel The City is on the wrong track)."
The lesson is clear, fiscally responsible Democrats are afforded the opportunity to lead on social issues. Strong leadership is respected and supported.
Remember, if politicians only follow the polls, nothing will ever change.
