Arnold or no Arnold, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer is steaming ahead with his bid for governor -- betting big time that the man now holding the job won't run for a second term.
At a San Francisco fund-raiser Wednesday night, Lockyer told 25 or so heavy-hitter supporters at Cafe Tiramisu words to the effect that "as my very best supporters, I want you to know something very important. ... Don't repeat this, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is not going to run again, and the race is only mine to lose.''
The Democratic AG then went on to state three reasons for his prediction:
1. "Arnold has personally told me on several occasions that he is not going to run again,''
2. "Maria Shriver has told NBC that she will be back in two years'' and
3. "Arnold has signed some movie contracts which will require him to work full time after 2006.''
As for reaction from the governor's office: "Bill is either nursing a fantasy or Oliver Stone has sold him a conspiracy theory,'' spokesman Rob Stutzman said.
I'm guessing Lockyer didn't plan for his prediction to end up in the Sunday paper. They may be heavy hitters, but it looks like not all of them are supporters (gay marriage?). Twenty months until the primary...
