James Tracy in the San Francisco Sentinel reports that Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez decided that this year's Housing Bond lacked merit and described those involved as a "circus."
Granted, you will have a festive group anytime you unite a coalition able to deliver the necessary 2/3 of a vote for a bond to pass. Yet the in the last 72 hours, this "circus" has featured a walk-on clown as Gonzalez's lust for the relevancy has potentially torpedoed housing for thousands of San Franciscans.
In case you’ve been in China, here’s what happened according to the Chronicle, the Chronicle and the Examiner. While this front page story is still in the newspaper racks, Adriel Hampton reports that Gonzalez does an about face. Unfortunately, this is a day late for bond proponents, who like everyone else in San Francisco walked by a newspaper stand on Wednesday.
The kids on the Board of this circus took playground politics to a new low in the sandbox. Maybe Peskin and Gonzalez thought that if the dug a deep enough hole, they would reach China where Supervisor Daly could save the day.
Luckily for Daly, things didn’t sink quite that low and he’ll be able to finish his respite undisturbed by anything other than panicked phone calls. Which is good for him, because as soon as his plane touches down Chris Daly is the undisputed leader of the left in San Francisco. Undisputed.
Gonzalez had his turn and Peskin had a good spot in line. But you can’t fuck up this big on an issue this important and still be respected at the end of the day.
Once again, San Franciscans hoping for affordable housing are waiting on a miracle.
